あなたはこのコピーをご存じですか？ 米国の広告史に残る60年代初期に始まった名キャンペーン「ナイセスト・ピープル」です。 VWビートルの一連の広告と並んで、米国で最も成功した例として知られるホンダの「ナイセスト・ピープル」のキャンペーンが米国民の持っていたオートバイのイメージを大きく変えました。

1959年にホンダが二輪車で本格的な米国進出が始まります。 しかし、そこには思いの外、厳しい現実が待ち受けていました。 それは、米国における移動手段は自動車が中心で、二輪市場は年間わずか６万台にすぎないこと。 さらにバイクはちょうど映画「イージー・ライダー」のように革ジャンを着たアウトロー（無法者）の遊び道具という悪しきイメージが有り敬遠されていました。 それを払拭すべく、「You meet the nicest people on a Honda」と謳ったキャンペーンを展開し、バイクの有る新しいライフ・スタイルを提案しました。 主婦や親子、カップルといった良識ある素敵な人（＝ナイセスト・ピープル）がカブに乗っている姿が描かれて、米国の一般家庭にバイクという文化を伝えました。 バイクを新しいおしゃれな乗り物として社会にアッピールした結果、若者達のアイドル商品となり対米輸出が急増し、1965年には26万8000台に達しました。 音楽界でもロックグループのビーチ・ボーイズが軽快なリズムの「Litte HONDA」をヒットさせました、その歌詞（下に掲載）は全くカブのコマーシャル・ソングと勘違いするほどです。 当時のケネディ大統領は「ホンダがアメリカの青少年に新しいライフ・スタイルを与えた」と池田首相に語ったそうです。 HONDAのブランド・イメージはこの時から米国にしっかりと定着しました。 |
